KDR In (Cincinnati) Lebanon; The Royal Dragon Workout; Regal Results
The Royal Dragon Workout and fundraiser, compliments of KDR Fitness in Lebanon, NH, went in the history book this morning to raise money for the Mascoma Royals Wrestling Team. Thirty some odd workout enthusiasts and fans jammed in and into KDR and when all was said and done, there was a regal amount in the coffers to benefit the Mascoma grapplers.
The Charity Workout; What’s It All About?
Talking to Ben Dearman, the proprietor of KDR Fitness, “We did our first charity workout, it was called the Red Dragon Workout. We just wanted to support a local charity and we thought dragons are pretty bad dudes and red dragons are pretty cool, so…..a name is born! The idea was to burn 1000 calories in 90 minutes and the first male and female to reach that goal get the brass ring.
Each participant is hooked up to a heart monitor and it calculates the amount of calories burned. According to Ben, “It’s not a perfect system, but it’s fairly accurate and really stimulates the competition!” The heart rate board is projected on a wall for all to see the progress.
The workout is a series of stations and every time (approx 2 mins) the instructors dictate, everyone switches stations. I have to tell you it looked like quite the grueling workout. If you consider that an hour on a treadmill at a zero degree incline will only burn about 200 calories….and the winners have to burn 1000 calories in under 90 minutes….well….do the math!
The heart rate can be up to as much as about 170 beats per minute and they will keep that up for somewhere around an hour. It’s not the quintessential killer workout but you’d better be in shape if you want to take home the bacon in this event.
We’ve Always Wanted To Have A Business That Gives Back
When asked why Ben sponsored the Royal Dragon Workout he simply stated, “We’ve always wanted to have a business that gives back to the community, and sponsoring these charity workouts enables us to do just that!” They pick a charity to sponsor and then have the event but in this case it was near and dear(man) to Ben’s heart. “I wrestled for three years and then grappled after that for a total of thirteen years. I know the level of dedication and commitment required to compete in that sport.”
In fact, Dearman credits wrestling as the basis for his motivation as a fitness enthusiast. “It’s just you out there on the mat and if you lose you can’t blame anyone but yourself. You have to put the hard work in before you’ll see the results.” Dearman also credits wrestling for shaping his work ethic and understanding the value of fitness. “You have to be superbly conditioned in the sport because it’s not always the technically best wrestler that wins, it’s the guy that’s still got gas in the tank in the third period that wins!”
But I digress so back to the point. KDR started out in Ben’s garage and grew into what it is now over the course of the last nine years. He’s passionate about giving back to the community, so any charity that is looking for a fundraiser, give Ben and the gang a call.
Dearman talked to Yarrow Farnsworth (center left) who was the point person for the Mascoma Royals Wrestling. Farnsworth is the coordinator for the booster club and is very aggressive about fundraising for the organization. Her older son is the 170 lb wrestler for the varsity and her younger son wrestles for the junior program. See Mascoma Royals Wrestling.
Thanks Ben for your contribution to the Mascoma Royals with the Royal Dragon Workout.
